The Kinks Are Well Respected Men (1987)

The Kinks Are Well-Respected Men is a two-disc CD compilation that compiles all of The Kinks' non-album B-sides,  EP tracks, standalone singles and B-sides from the sixties up to about 1970 or 1971. Basically, the Kinks' version of Past Masters 1 and 2 by The Beatles and no less all-inclusive, but lacking boring German versions of songs, thankfully.

All of these tracks have been elsewhere compiled, especially on The Kinks' many deluxe and super-deluxe issues -- however, this set, presented mostly in mono, is much better sounding than any of those, which are either really harshly equalized (the late 90s sets) or brickwalled (everything after the late 90s.) This sound is dynamic and nice -- I mean, insofar as any Kinks record can be termed nice sounding. Of course, the sound is a shambles, that's just the noise that The Kinks made -- and it's sometimes weirdly mixed and messy sounding. But it doesn't hurt your ears to hear it, which the main thing,

I basically collected all of the 80s and early 90s masters of CDs by The Kinks as I can listen to them and crank them without calling forth my mild tinnitus and thus is is essential. Oh, and there are many awesome songs -- like The Beatles, the Kinks released quite a lot of non album songs in the UK and many of them are some of their greatest singles, if not necessarily their biggest hits. But even your average casual fan will recognize some of the songs here, and the rest are mostly good as we see The Kinks go from garagey Rhythm and Blues to ragged baroque pop/psychedelic masters to classic rock band in the space of six short years.

5/5

This doesn't stream on Spotify, though all the tracks as bonus tracks to the albums they more or less coincided with.
