Apollo 18 - They Might Be Giants (1992)
Apollo 18 was They Might Be Giants fourth full-length album and their last album as a duo. It's a pretty well-produced set of songs that mix zany pop culture references with geeky odes to science and history along with ruminations on death, mortality and post-modern alienation -- and a healthy dollop of non-sequiturs.
They Might Be Giants never really do bad albums but I find this is a bit melodically less inspired than the first three albums, or the follow up, 1994's John Henry, which is one of my all-time favorite albums.
The gimmicky "Fingertips Part 2", is comprised of songs that are ten to 20 seconds long and in fact, onthe original CD release were tracked differently in order to make the new-fangled "random play" option on CD players fun. My version, a German pressing, has it all on one track though.
In the end, nothing here is bad: they are still clever (meaning smart) as hell and the album is good, but other than "Fingertips" few songs stick out to me: when I do recall one, it's the title and nothing else: ultimately this succeeds because of the lyrics and arrangmeents, not the tunes, which is not usual.
3.5/5
Heres "I Palindrome I", which is actually one of the more memorablesongs on teh album.
I have the original European release which differs from the American in that "Fingertips Part 2 is all one long track. It soundspretty good!
