Aimee Mann Live at St. Ann's Warehouse (2004)

Aimee Mann Live at St. Anne's Warehouse, self-released on her own SuperEgo record label, after the twin mid-career career triumph of Bachelor No. 2 and Lost In Space,  sounds about what you'd expect an Aimme Mann album to sound like: a very polished, professional set of Aimee Mann songs  that rock a little harder overall but are really not that  different from the studio versions of the songs.

Weakly recommended for fans, more recommneded for newcomers, as it is a good introduction to the best of her songs from the first four solo albums. . The weak recommnedation is simply that it just doesn't feel all that necessary to me in the context of her overall career. Good for an occasional listen, but if it hadn't been for this blog, I'm not sure if I'd have put it on at all.

Of course Aimee Mann is such an incredible songwriter, one of the best living in my opinion, that it's almost impossible not to enjoy. And on this cold-ish grey day in late November, there's something really snug and nice about listening to Aimee Mann's warm voice and gorgeous melodies envelop me. There are no big surprises on this one -- not even a single 'Til Tuesday or cover, but the set list functions as an excellent introduction to Aimee Mann's first four albums, and there is one song from the then-upcoming album The Forgotten Arm.

3.5/5

This originally was released on CD with a an accompanying DVD featuring a concert film of the same performance and featruing a few extra songs. I'm sure that's great, but I opted for a simpele iTunes copy. The sound is compressed and loud, but it sounds ok: live albums should be loud.
