Aerosmith's Greatest Hits (1980)

A lot of critics back in the day seemed to dismiss Aerosmith as just some kind of Rolling Stones rip off band. I don't get that. Yes, they did mine a similar vein of hard-edged blues rock as The Rolling Stones and yes Steven Tyler has a big mouth like Mick Jagger. But the comparison short changes both bands in my opinion.

Steven Tayler is actually a much better singer than Mick Jagger, and the guitarists definitely bring their own spin to the whole bluesy riff-rock thing. On the other hand, The Rolling Stones actually were far more adventurous than just blues rock, especially in the Brian Jones' psychedelic hey day.

Bottom line is, this is one of the great rock bands of the seventies delivering a punchy set of hard rock hits. At least half of these are absolute classics and the other half are near-classics.

Sheer fun.

I originally owned this album on cassette back in high school, and I lost it at some point, years later. My current copy is a CD bought in Europe -- but an original master. I understand the remaster is compressed and over-loud.
